A brief advice-based article at the Huffington Post takes a look at the life of recent American expatriates and gives some recommendations for how people can adapt to living abroad. Most of the bullet points deal with the issue from the perspective of what to do once you’ve already gotten there, although the article does also advise aspiring expats to both pack light and be aware of what they might only be able to get at home.

The latter point is interesting from the perspective of advance planning and the relocation services you’ll have to square away before you even get on the plane or boat. Whether your expatriation involves lots of moving boxes and packing supplies or just a backpack and an uncertain future, it may be beneficial for you to figure out ahead of time whether there are things you can’t find locally, and arrange for loved ones, colleagues, or a helpful shipping service to send additional moving boxes or shipping crates on a regular basis.

In this sense, the initial move could serve as the proving ground for a long-term relationship with a crate shipping and relocation service.

If you’re going abroad, keep in mind that such a service may be one of your only direct links back home. And when your homesick for things you can only find stateside, you’ll be glad to know that your shipping service is one you can rely on.
