Almost every house has at least one or two house plants in it. Many people don’t think about how they’re going to transport their plants when it comes time to move. Simply placing them bare on a truck is not recommended. Plants can easily be damaged by temperature changes, and are prone to becoming unpotted during a move.
- Here are a few tips to follow for safe and easy transportation of plants:
- Do not water the plants for a few days before the move. This will help prevent messy spills. If you have any plants that require daily watering, do not deprive them of water.
- Untangle any branches that you can.
- Put smaller plants in durable grocery bags (with handles). Place a piece of cardboard under the plant (in the bag) to help prevent the plant from toppling.
- If you have larger plants, take a large trash bag and pull it up over the branches and leaves. Place (the pot of) these big plants in boxes to keep them from falling over. You can place bricks around the pot within the box to help prevent it from falling over.
- If your plants are sensitive to certain temperatures, be sure to put them on the moving truck last and take the out first upon arriving at your destination. You should also ensure that they are exposed to the external environment as little as possible (close truck doors right away, remove from truck and bring into new home immediately, etc…) This is critical to their survival.
- Upon arriving at your destination, be sure to rehydrate your plants (especially if you haven’t been watering them for a few days, as was instructed in Step 1). Give them a good amount of water and, if possible, use a spray bottle to spray some water on the leaves.
